According to Barnes, new media foster creativity for many
individuals who have access to the internet. YouTube users often use the
program called mash-ups to combine snippets of other videos to create a new
video. For example, a YouTube user used the song called “Crank That (Soulja
Boy)” to combine snippets of Disney movies together. Within months, the videos
started to gain popularity and the song has climb its way up to the No.1 hit on
Billboard Hot 100 of the month. New
media allow individuals to turn something old into something new by altering
the original version of the product.
